Snake Gourd and Dal Thoran (Padavalanga Parippu Thoran)

Snake gourd – 1 medium sized (cut into 1/2 inch cubes)

Dal – 4 tablespoons

Small onions – 4 tablespoons

Grated coconut – 1 cup

Green chillies – 3

Garlic – 1 small pod

Turmeric powder– 1/4 teaspoon

Cumin powder – 1 pinch

Dry red chillies – 2

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

Mustard seeds – 1/4 teaspoon

Oil – 2 tablespoons

Water – 1 cup

Salt to taste

How to:

Grind coconut, green chillies, garlic, turmeric powder and cumin powder to a coarse mixture without adding any water.

Cook the dal in a cup of water till half done, add the chopped snake gourd and a little salt and the ground coconut mixture and continue to cook till done.

In a pan add oil, splutter mustard seeds, sauté the onions, dry red chillies and curry leaves, till the onions are properly browned. Pour this over the dal. The thoran is ready to serve. Serve with rice.
